My father was Cpl Robert D. Johnson. He flew in the 401st as a flight engineer/top turret gunner. He was in either the 612th, 613th, or posibly the 614th. I have a picture of him and his crew in front of thier B-17. Anyone with any information about him or the crew would be appreciated. He died September 6, 1992. He served in the Air Force Reserves until the age of 60. Thanks,

Robert, I noted two Johnsons listed as Top Turret /Engineer on our Squadron rosters. Do you have th pilots name...or any other crew men's names. Anything to identify him more, Unfortunately, our historian erred a bit when copying names and initials.any numbers on the airplane?? L.A. Mitchell

All I have at the present is the crew photo. It was taken of them between no. 3 and no. 4 engines. The ground crew is alos in he picture. Two of them crew have patches on thrir jackets. The image is faint but I belive it is of the orginal 612th patch {Mangler}. I was quite young when he recounted his stories to me and names are long forgotten. He claimed the "Gloria J." was named after my sister.

The closest initials I have found are an R.W. in the 615th as a Waist Gunner. Like L.A. says, there are a lot of errors in initials. The Gloria J. was in the 614th and was shot down 4/11/44. There are no known pictures of the Gloria J. If there are any other crew names, that would help.

The Gloria J. indicates only one missions flown in the history part of the 401st Web Page. The pilot on that day was Lt. R.O. Stine of the 614th. Do you happen to known how many missions your dad flew? Mission 49 of the 401st was when she was lost due to flak damage.

Prior to July/August of 1944, they really didn't keep track of plane serial numbers and nicknames unless something dramatic happened to a plane/crew during a mission. At least it establishes a period in which it flew.

I just recently discovered this website by accident while searching for other information. I have printed out the application and will mail it in right away. I am a little disappointed I can't answer some of the needed questions to complete my quest for information. MY brother has the "Blue Book" and quite a few loose photos. I will try and get them and see if I can get any tail numbers or anything else that might help. Thanks for your help.

Although I stated an amount that I had heard from a veteran it was apparently very very wrong and I beg your forgivness for giving out incorrect information.
I will in the future guide anyone interested it this and other matters with the Association to the right people and let them respond.
