I am heading up an aviation archeology group to put proper closure to the crash of B-17 42-6090 of the 612th squadron.
The pilot was 2nd Lt John W McIlwain. the crash occured on October 1, 1943 after a practice bombing run out of Great Falls Montana. A documentary film crew will also accompany the group this summer to the crash site in Montana. If any one has any remembrances or information concerning the accident I would deeply appreciate the sharing. Thank you

And I would be interested about anything on the pilot. We're probably related and if you have any family info on him, or where he was from, I'd like to hear it.

I saw your name and wondered the same thing. since the big fire at the records center I am afraid that we are hitting a brick wall. I have the AF accident report with serial numbers and ranks. thats why I was hoping that if anyone who was in the squardon on the day of the crash might have had a conversation with anyone it would be valuable to the group and the documentary. So far except from you I have had no feed back. why would you think the pilot might be a relative. did any one from your family happen to be in WW II aviation? If I get anything I'll post to you.

My dad was in the 612th, but didn't get to the 401st until September of 44. There are a lot of variations of our name, but we all pretty much came from a line of Scottish land owners, the Lairds of Grimmet and Attiquin farms, that date to the 1300s. There is another "Cousin" on the wall at Maddingley Cemetery in Cambridge.

I came across a cadet graduation picture of John W McIlwain a couple of months ago. I beleive he got his 2nd LT commisson and wings at Freeman Air Field in Seymour, ID on April 29, 1943.
