I first had contact with George about 12 years ago when he answered a request about my uncle who served in the 613th Bomber Squadron. My first reunion was in 2000 where I met him and was able to observe him and others who had a passion with the 401st Bombardment Group and I was surely impressed of such dedication. Following reunions just confirmed my understanding of dedication to a cause with my election to the Board of Directors in 2006 and recently to Group Historian. George has showed us all how to remember and he will be missed by us all. My thoughts and prayers to the family of such a man.

It was with sadness and a deep sense of shock to learn that George had passed away. I have known him for some 30 years during which time we have shared many happy occasions both in England and the USA. George was a wonderfull guy who had a fantastic memorary for events that happened so many years ago, culminating at the last 401st Reunion when George presented me with the Hal Bowman Award. George will be sadly missed by all of his friends in the Historical Society in England, who send their condolences and to let you know that you are in their thoughts and prayers. Such a loss; my thoughts and prayers are with the family of George Menzel. I was privileged to meet him at the 2008 reunion in Washington D.C. and had hoped to know him better in the future. May God be with his family, and with us. We shall surely miss him.

I met George at the 2008 401st reunion in Washington DC, and got to know him through phone discussions we had this spring and summer. George honored me with a signed copy of his book, "Portrait of a Flying Lady" that happened to arrive at my home the day I returned from a trip to England (including a visit to Deenethorpe) this summer. The receipt of this book and the personal note he wrote brought me to tears. I will miss George greatly, as will so many other members of the 401st Bomb Group Assn.
Please accept my condolences.
